HWMHS has a structured careers program for Years 9-12, where both juniors and seniors participate in a fortnightly lesson. Additionally and importantly, students have open access to the Careers Adviser for personal career planning and advice. We offer Year 10 access to TAFE Open Day in Griffith each year as well as participation in TAFE ‘mini courses'. Year 10 also has the opportunity to participate in a work experience week in August. This year some of our students extended themselves and organized some fabulous experiences in specialized work places such as aviation mechanics, physiotherapy and training with the NSW Fire Brigade. Our students always make great impressions on their employers and often gain part time or full time work from this week.
Accreditation for First Aid and the OH&S White Card are other services offered to our students by the Careers Department. This gives students valuable extra qualifications to make them more competitive in their transition to the workplace. The opportunities and experiences we can deliver are often supported by funding received from School to Work Program.
School Based Traineeships have been a wonderful new innovation, offering students an alternative pathway to full time senior study. SBT's work one day per week with an employer, study a corresponding vocational course and attend school on 4 days. At the moment we have 7 School Based Trainees, covering areas such as Aged Care, Retail, Information Technology, Construction and Financial Services. Students are responding well to this new pathway and it is quickly becoming a popular option for year 10 students entering Year 11.
Senior students should leave school with a completed resume and full guidance and support in applying for tertiary courses. Year 12 has the opportunity to participate in an annual Tertiary Tour. In 2011 this involved a number of Melbourne institutions as well as attending a careers expo on Southbank. HWMHS has an excellent record of success with university entrance, especially early entrance schemes. Many of our students are encouraged to apply for specialized workshops such as Rural Medicine and Electrical Engineering.
Job seekers have access to the Careers Adviser for assistance with job applications and mock interviews. HWMS maintains strong links with its ex-students to the point where many drop by to let us know how their training/careers are progressing or to ask for some advice.
